Calling all Witcher fans, did you know that there are some incredible The Witcher filming locations that you can visit in Wales?

That’s right, the Netflix team visited the breathtaking national parks and coastline of South Wales to film some of the most spectacular scenes from series 3.

So, you can follow in the footsteps of Geralt, Ciri, Yen and Jaskier from their epic adventures and race from the Wild Hunt.

News from The Continent and Redanian Intelligence is that they have also started filming The Witcher series 4 around North Wales as well.

Here are all the epic The Witcher filming locations in Wales you can visit with practical travel tips.

Witcher fans: be careful wanderer, there are some spoilers for series 3 below.

The Witcher in South Wales

The production team picked some stunning locations in South Wales for series 3.

They filmed in both the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons) and the coastline near Cardiff and the Gower Peninsula.

You can visit most of the coastal locations in just a day if you’re happy to drive for a while.

However, if you want to visit all The Witcher filming locations in South Wales then I would recommend two days with a stopover in the middle.

1. Nash Point Lighthouse

Nash Point is a dramatic location on the cliffs that featured in The Witcher series 3, episode 4 ‘The Invitation’.

This is the port where Geralt, Jaskier and Ciri all climb aboard a boat heading to Aretuza Island to meet the mages.

Why they decided that the port would be accessed from a tall cliff is a total mystery to anyone.

But, hey, I guess this is the Witcherverse so stranger things have happened.

Regardless, the location and scenery here are breathtaking and you can take a short walk to the clifftops to see where they filmed these scenes from the show.

Of course, the port won’t be there on your visit as they added this in with CGI magic in post-production.

However, the formations on the cliffs can easily be seen from the coast path with gorgeous views over the ocean.

Just be careful when hiking up here and don’t get too close to the edges, especially if it’s very windy.

After you’ve visited the filming location, you can then head back to your car park and walk over to Nash Point Lighthouse on a short and scenic walk.

Practical information for visiting Nash Point

  • The road is quite narrow when approaching the lighthouse. It’s a single lane with passing places so drive with care.
  • In the off-season, there is a small free car park outside Cliff Top Café. The café is not usually open in winter.
  • In summer, you pay £5 to park your car and £8 for camper vans.
  • Wear sensible shoes as it’s quite slippery getting up to the cliff tops. Remember to stay safe and well away from the cliff edges!

2. Llantwit Major Beach

Llantwit Major Beach is another location featured in The Witcher series 3, episode 4 ‘The Invitation’.

This is shown after Geralt, Jaskier and Ciri’s adventurous sea voyage where they encounter an Aeschna (Sea Monster) they have to fight.

The three are then happy to be back on dry land at Aretuza and they are seen walking up one of the slipways on this beach towards the fortress.

It’s best to visit Llantwit Major Beach at low tide to see this location as the walkways will be under the ocean at high tide.

At low tide, you can walk over the large boulders to see the slipway on the beach which is surrounded by incredible cliffs.

They are instantly recognisable as you’ll see thousands of sandy layers in the sediment. It makes an incredible photo opportunity.

If you do happen to visit at high tide, don’t fret. There are great views of the area located up on the cliffs.

Just follow the steps up towards the South Wales Coast Path and you’ll find a convenient viewpoint.

Tips for visiting Llantwit Major Beach

  • Again the roads are very narrow approaching Llantwit Major. So, drive with consideration and use passing places.
  • There is a free car park that gets very busy. There are also public toilets and a great café that is open almost all year.

3. Three Cliffs Bay

Three Cliffs Bay features in The Witcher series 3, episode 6 ‘Everybody Has a Plan ’til They Get Punched in the Face’.

This is where Geralt and Vilgefortz fight after the Conclave of the Mages at Aretuza Fortress.

Yen and Geralt put together a plan to uncover salacious secrets about Stregobor.

But, as you heard hundreds of times over in that episode ‘All is not as it seems’.

Eventually, they discover that Vilgefortz is behind the experiments and kidnapping and has been hiding behind a web of lies and deceit.

So, Geralt and Vilgefortz have an epic showdown of a vicious sword fight on the beach.

Unfortunately, Vilgefortz beats Geralt and leaves in an air of mystery. It’s safe to say that The Content will never be the same going forward!

You can visit the sandy beach and cave where this sword fight takes place at Three Cliffs Bay on The Gower Peninsula.

The best views of this beach can be found from the Three Cliffs Bay Viewpoint. This is not an easy place to reach but is worth the effort!

It’s also worth stopping by Pennard Castle on the cliffs above the bay.

Not only does this medieval ruin look like something from the Witcherverse but it provides a stunning view over the beach and beyond.

Practical information for visiting Three Cliffs Bay

  • You cannot park directly at Three Cliffs Bay. You need to drive to a parking area and walk a minimum of 15-20 minutes to access the beach.
  • I recommend Parkmill in Paenmen at Shepherds of Gower. It’s a local shop where you pay £4 for all-day parking but space is limited. Click here for a Google Pin.
  • Wear sensible shoes as you’ll be walking on steep sandy plains and the hills are tough on your legs making it difficult to navigate.
  • There are also cows everywhere. As someone who has had bad experiences with cows on hikes, I was a little scared. But, they were quite docile here. I can’t say my soul didn’t leave my body when I encountered one walking towards me in the dark though…

4. Trefil Quarry

Trefil Quarry is a dramatic location in Bannau Brycheiniog which was featured in The Witcher series 3, episodes 4 & 6.

In episode 4, Yen sees a portal while waiting for Geralt and Ciri and so she steps through it hoping to find them.

Instead, she meets a fake Geralt who tries to attack her. So, she escapes to the Island of Aretuza and waits for them to join her there.

In episode 6, Geralt and Yennifer both fight Rience or ‘Fire F*cker’ here.

The quarry is free to visit but you do have to walk a little while from a parking area to reach it!

Bonus magical locations that you can visit

A great thing about this Witcher road trip is the fact that there are plenty of other magical places that you can visit along the way.

To break up the journey, I visited some places that looked straight out of the Witcherverse.

The first was Ogmore-by-Sea Mossy Marsh which is an emerald craggy plain that looked like something from a fantasy world.

It’s not easily located on Google Maps but I have some coordinates to help you locate it. There’s free parking and it’s a short walk towards the beach.

  • Coordinates for Free Lay-By Parking: 51°28’19.1″N 3°37’45.4″W
  • Coordinates for Location: 51°28’21.3″N 3°37’53.9″W

Also, I recommend stopping by Worms Head at the very north of the Gower Peninsula.

It’s an incredible place on the cliffs where you can hike to ‘the worm’ at low tide.

You can also get great views of Rhossili Bay Beach from here. It’s been voted as one of the prettiest beaches in the world!

It’s a National Trust area so if you’re a member, you can park for free. If not, you pay £6 for all-day parking.

St Mary’s Church nearby also has a few parking places with a donation box for £2. There are some toilets, a gift shop, a cafe and a pub nearby.

Did you know there’s a place in South Wales called Gwent?

If you are a fan of The Witcher then you will most likely know of Gwent.

It’s mentioned briefly in the books but it’s a card game that you can play in various taverns and kingdoms throughout the Witcher games.

It’s a strategy card game of choices and consequences, where skill, not luck, is your greatest weapon.

Well, the County of Monmouthshire in South Wales used to be called the Kingdom of Gwent once upon a time!

It was a medieval Welsh Kingdom from the 5th century. There is now a county borough called Gwent in the same area formed in 1974.

The Witcher in North Wales

So, this is a little cheeky of me but I’m going to include some of the Witcher Series 4 filming locations in Wales.

The team have already been spotted filming in Llanberis with Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia.

So, far, we know of four locations in North Wales where they are filming the new show.

There hasn’t been any confirmation of what these places will be used for but it’s easy to see why they chose them as the scenery is out of this world.

I’ll update this post as soon as I know!

5. Dolbadarn Castle

Dolbardarn Castle is the main filming location where The Witcher team were spotted filming this summer.

It’s easy to see why as this medieval ruined castle is surrounded by mountains and perched above a mystical lake.

Although it’s unknown what this location was used for specifically, I’m sure it’s going to be something noteworthy.

Other than being a The Witcher filming location, Dolbadarn Castle is one of my favourite castles in all of Wales.

It belonged to Prince Llywelyn the Great once upon a time and is a symbol of Welsh identity and power.

It’s free to visit but you do have to pay for parking. The closest car park is directly below the castle and costs £6 to park all day.

6. Llyn Padarn

Another incredible location where the team were seen filming The Witcher series 4 is Llyn Padarn in Llanberis.

This lake is mired in myth and is supposedly where King Arthur threw his sword Excalibur to The Lady of the Lake.

Today, you’ll find ‘The Blade of Giants’ in the lakeside car park as a nod to the famous legend.

If you wanted a great view, then I would recommend seeking out the Lone Tree of Llyn Padarn.

This evocative location has a perfect panorama of the lake, Snowdonia mountain range and Dolbadarn Castle in the distance.

7. Zip World’s Penrhyn Quarry

The crew were also seen filming at Zip World and Penrhyn Quarry. It’s a former slate quarry that is located near Bethesda, North Wales.

In the nineteenth century it was the world’s largest slate quarry but now is home to the world’s fastest zip line!

There are 5 zipline experiences you can have here including the ‘Quarry Flyer’ where you can fly 500 metres above the Blue Lagoon.

They also have tours where you can learn the history of the area and a Blondin Café where you can watch adrenaline junkies fly over a coffee.

This would honestly be the coolest way to experience a visit to this new Witcher filming location!

8. National Slate Museum

The last location in North Wales where The Witcher was being filmed is the National Slate Museum.

Now, I’ve been to this museum in the past as it is amazing. There are lots of old buildings and houses that showcase the history of slate production in the area.

But, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the production crew were most likely filming near Dinorwic Slate Quarry – an epic area owned by the museum.

How to Visit Dinorwic Quarry Wales

It’s an abandoned quarry that has been used in Hollywood movies of the past.

Warner Brothers used Dinorwig to film their blockbuster Clash of the Titans (2010) here starring Sam Worthington and Liam Neeson.

I guess we’ll wait and see. I can’t wait for The Witcher season 4 to air on Netflix and see parts of my home country featured again!

My top tips for your Witcher road trip

  • Check the tide times – in South Wales, most of The Witcher filming locations are on the coast. Always check tide times before you visit as most are best visited at low tide.
  • Explore by car – You can get to most of the beaches by bus and walking in Wales but it’s easiest if you have a car for your Witcher road trip.
Rhossili Bay Beach
  • Have a SatNav prepared – the phone signal in these remote locations is very poor. If you rely on your phone for driving, I would have a SatNav on hand just in case.
  • Stay safe – Always stay safe visiting locations on The Path. They are not always the easiest to get to and explore.

Looking for more The Witcher Filming Locations in the UK?

Most of The Witcher series 2 was filmed in some beautiful locations in the North of England.

The best area to explore The Witcher would be the Lake District.

Here you can visit the skull cave that is featured as Kaer Morhen. This is Hodge Close Quarry.

You also have the scenic area surrounding Blea Tarn where Geralt travels with his crew.

Also, Rydal Cave where Jaskier takes a much-needed bath after spending time in Oxfenfurt’s jail.

If you’re in Yorkshire, you can easily head to another Witcher filming location, Gordale Scar in the Yorkshire Dales.

This is near the spectacular Malham Cove, where Geralt and Ciri fight off the Myriapod.

Plumpton Rocks also featured in the epic Chernobog fight scene.

Fountains Abbey is the location where Yennefer saves Cahir from execution.

Also, the Studley Water Gardens nearby is where Fringilla Vigo and Francesca Findabair discuss plans for Cahir.

Finally, in County Durham, you can head over to Low Force Waterfall.

This spectacular location is where Yennefer teaches Ciri to use her powers to cross over the river!
